One session and three session options
TheaterConnect I – Exploring Cultural Heritage
In this two-hour workshop, students virtually connect with overseas peers to explore the aspects of cultural heritage that are most meaningful to them – and the challenges these aspects pose in their daily lives.
Students in the workshop will:
- Get to know their TheaterConnect partners through theater games
- Share culturally revealing personal artifacts with one another and the stories behind them
- Stage scenes bringing these stories to life, looking into their underlying meaning
Workshop Summary:
- For high and upper middle school students (10-25 students per class, no theater experience necessary)
- Moderate English fluency preferred
- Virtual live connection over Zoom
- Duration: 2 hours
- Cost: $325 (funding support available)
TheaterConnect II – Problem Solving Through Intercultural Storytelling
Over three two-hour sessions, US and international students engage in problem solving through intercultural storytelling and applied theater.
Students meet virtually over these fully-facilitated sessions where they:
- Day 1: Get to know each other through interactive theater and cultural exchange exercises
- Day 2: Learn narrative skills by telling and listening to personal stories in their individual classrooms
- Day 3: Use drama techniques to practice adaptive problem solving skills and methods to communicate across global cultures
Student participants navigate 21st century learning skills by practicing creative and critical thinking, communication and listening techniques, intercultural awareness and empathy, greater understanding of their personal relation to their cultures, and adaptive leadership skills.
Workshop Summary:
- For upper-middle and high school students (25 students or fewer)
- Moderate English fluency preferred
- Virtual live connection over Zoom
- Duration: 3 sessions totaling 6 hours
- Cost: $950 (funding support available)
Meet the Facilitator
Meet the Facilitator
Tim Steckler is a Brooklyn based teaching artist, facilitator, director, actor, and community organizer. He has designed and led workshops with participants from around the world, including STEM students in New York, refugees in Jordan, mental health professionals from the West Bank, police officers and civilians in Brooklyn, and students in Nepal and the United States through cultural exchanges. Tim holds a Master’s in Education from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Principia College.
What is applied theater?
Applied theater is literally theater that is applied to real life scenarios, including in education, social justice, and ways to imagine a better world using the medium of storytelling. In this case, it is theater made by and for students on issues they care about and want to address.
