During sunset over the past two days the buildings of Manhattan were lit up with the beauty and colors of the setting sun.

This happens twice a year, in May and in July, when the Earth’s tilt is just right to have the sun right on the horizon, in line with the orientation of New York City’s street grid. The sunset aligns with the buildings and streets creating pockets of light streaming through the buildings in the glowing colors of the setting sun.

The term  Manhattanhenge comes from this phenomenon being similar to what happens when the sun sets on the stones of Stonehenge, located in the English county of Wiltshire.
