April 14th will commemorate the end of the harvest season; it marks a new year for the Sinhalese people (constitutes 74% of the Sri Lankan population). Special foods, such kiribath (rice cooked in coconut milk) as are prepared, new clothes are worn and horoscopes are cast for the forthcoming year.

“As you continue your work to build a prosperous, democratic Sri Lanka, I offer my best wishes for a safe and happy holiday and a prosperous, peaceful year ahead.”
