Looking Back, Looking Forward

Dear Friends,

Looking back over thirty-four years, and ahead to our 35th year, I find myself thinking about the simple question that started Creative Connections: “Why should the opportunity to experience other cultures belong only to a few students?” I wanted to create a simple, accessible way for students to connect around the world through art, and conversations.

My hope was that students would first discover something about themselves, then share their stories and artwork with someone from another culture and discover something equally important: while we may be different, we are also remarkably alike.

Thirty-four years later, I have had the extraordinary privilege of seeing that idea come to life in classrooms around the world, as artwork crosses borders and students meet one another.

The world has changed enormously since Creative Connections began, but the need to understand one another has never been greater.

As we look toward our 35th year, I am excited about the students we have yet to reach and the connections we have yet to make.

I am deeply grateful to all of you, our teachers, students, partners, friends, and donors, who have believed in this idea and helped it grow.

What began with a simple question has become a lifelong journey of connection, and a belief that when students share their stories and listen to one another, they discover how much we all have in common.

With deep appreciation,

Alan Steckler, Founder & President

From the Field

This fall, Ethics Lab is kicking off its third cohort with a six-week virtual exchange connecting high school students at Fairchild Wheeler Interdistrict Magnet School in Bridgeport, CT with partners in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The cohort’s working theme is “An Ethical Lens on Environmental Stewardship.”

As part of the launch, Tim will travel to Argentina on September 19th for 10 days to lead introductory EL sessions with the Argentine students and run workshops at a number of local schools.

We’re also looking ahead to an exciting year of programming, including both multi-week exchanges and shorter, two-hour workshops. Spring and Summer 2027 partnerships will include: Kenya, Uganda, and the United States, while we explore new connections in Jordan, Taiwan and Ecuador.

And this October, our team will present the program at the IVEC Conference, sharing our approach to using creative exchange to engage students in exploring ethics, empathy, and global citizenship.

How FIFA Brought Norwalk & Ghana Together

This summer, the distance between Norwalk & Ghana felt a whole lot smaller.

Through a new partnership with Horizons at CT State Norwalk, Global Voices-ArtLink students connected face-to-face (virtually!) through a series of Intercultural Video Conferences (IVC). In small groups, they shared personal artifacts & artwork they had created, sparking conversations about culture, school, traditions, passions, and, as it turns out, a shared love of FIFA!

That’s the moment GV-ArtLink is built for. Not just learning about another place, but meeting the people in it: asking questions, being curious, and walking away realizing they have more in common with someone across the world than they imagined.

We have valued our partnership with Norwalk Public Schools over the years, and we’re excited to continue that work this year, with 25 classes participating in the Global Voices–ArtLink Program and Ethics Labworkshops.

We’re grateful to our generous funder for making this work possible and helping to continue to bring meaningful global connections to Norwalk students.

There’s still time to apply for the first cycle! Apply today.

Put a Classroom on the Map

Your support gives up to 50 students the opportunity to connect with the world.

Help create the next connection!

A $1,200 sponsorship brings together two GV-ArtLink classrooms (a U.S. classroom and an international partner) through art, conversation, and shared stories. Your gift gives students the chance to meet someone they might never otherwise know, and discover how much they have in common across cultures & continents.
Your sponsorship also gives you a way to be part of their experience.

As a special thank you for sponsoring a class, you will receive:

This year’s International Art Portfolio, a set of student-created artwork note cards, and more… a small way for us to share our students’ creativity with you!

Art Goes to Town

Keep an eye out! You might spot a little piece of us around Fairfield County.

This summer, we took Creative Connections out into the community with a new set of art cards. After brainstorming, designing, and refining, we created three unique cards featuring artwork by students in Cambodia, Guatemala, & Sri Lanka.

Each card offers a glimpse into who we are, how we connect students across the world, as well as free resources for teachers, students, & families.

Want a digital version?
Just send us an email, and we’ll be happy to share them with you.
