This first of this summers’ three supermoons occurred over the weekend and lit up the sky Friday night into Saturday morning. According to NASA, a supermoon occurs when the moon becomes full on the same days as its perigee, which is the point in the moon’s orbit when it is closest to Earth.

The combination of the moons proximity to earth and its full shape results in a moon that appears 14% larger and up to 30% brighter, making supermoons quite noticeable and spectacular to observe. But don’t worry if you missed this past weekends, as two more are due to occur this summer!

Be sure to keep an eye on the sky August 10th and September 9th to catch the next ones. In the meantime, please enjoy these lovely student artist depictions of moons from around the world.
