About the Artwork

My drawing shows two men drumming and singing for the Kankurang. (The Gambia’s Kankurang dance is a Mandinka masquerade who is dressed in leaves, bark and ochre coloured tree fibre with a machete in one hand and a stick in the other. Among the Mandinka of the Gambia today there are two basic forms of costumes for these masked dancers, the Fara (shredded or torn bark from the camel foot tree) and the Fito (leaf) Kankurang.) People give him money and the children are scared. He is chasing the children as they are running away from him.

I live with my parents. My mom is named Lisa Fofana and my dad is named Mr. Fofana. My grandma’s name is Amie Toufay and my grandfather’s name is Omar Fofana. I am a Gambian. I am in the 5th grade. I have a brother named Muhammed and a sister named Amie. My favorite color is yellow.
I like our local dish called Domoda (peanut stew) and I like eating mangos too. My favorite subject is English.
