This original Valentine’s Day poem was written in 1784 and is from a collection of English nursery rhymes found inGammer Gurton’s Garland.

The rose is red, the violet’s blue,
The honey’s sweet, and so are you.  
Thou art my love and I am thine;  
I drew thee to my Valentine:  
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou’d be you

Valentine’s Day is a time when people show feelings of love, affection and friendship. It is celebrated in many ways worldwide and falls on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in countries including Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia.
Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and loved ones of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or greetings.
