Raksha Bandan means “bond of protection” in Hindi.

August 2, 2012 a day to celebrate the special bond between brothers and sisters!

To celebrate this bond a bracelet made from thread, symbolizing  love, is called the ‘Rakhi’. It symbolizes ‘a bond of protection’. Rakhis are usually made of silk with gold and silver threads, sequins, and studded with semi-precious stones.
The celebration is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan(August), on which sisters tie the Rakhi string on their brothers’ right wrists, and pray for their long and happy life.  This not only strengthens the bond of love between brothers and sisters, but also between friends. When a Rakhi is tied on the wrists of close friends and neighbors, it represents the wish for harmony and peace, where everyone co-exists as “brothers and sisters”.

The young artist describes her piece,“Raksha Bandhan is the festival of Hindu. It brings a smile in brother’s face. In this festival everyone is happy and I like this festival. Every brothers give gift to their sisters in this festival. I chose this scene because on Raksha Bandhan every hands of brothers is decorated by Rakhi.”
